The fight for forest protection began long ago when Fred van Eck, an investment manager by trade, created the van Eck Forests, fueled by his passions for finance and wildlife. For decades, the van Eck Forests in Northern California and Oregon have been managed using an innovative model at a cross-section of conservation, climate, and commerce. In addition to reducing carbon by the equivalent of removing over 400,000 cars from the road, these forests continue to produce revenue and to help fund forest research. But how?

In answering this question, “Beyond the Trees” tells the story of one family’s deep-rooted partnership with the Pacific Forest Trust, a conservation trust on a mission to unite ecological safeguarding with economic benefits. You’ll meet scientists and other experts who are pioneering new methods of managing whole forest ecosystems: restoring forests from the root systems below to the canopies above, and enabling a future where forests can once again thrive as complete, diverse, life-sustaining systems — not just rows of trees.
